Every makeup lover knows that the beauty world was taken by a storm when Kylie Jenner started Kylie Cosmetics. Everyone wanted to get their hands on her lip kits, including me.
I’m not a fan of the Kardashian/Jenner family, but annoyingly I always want makeup that everyone else wants. At first, Kylie Cosmetics lip kits were extremely hard to get because they sold out within minutes. Therefore, I never got the chance to purchase them. Then the hype turned to the other products Kylie released and I didn’t have an undying need to purchase the lip kits anymore. However, back in May for Cinco de Mayo she had a really great deal going on where you could get a free lip kit for every lip kit you purchase. I couldn’t resist the deal and ordered four lip kits – Dolce K, Koko K, Mary Jo K and Love Bite.
Kylie Cosmetics Dolce K Lip Kit
I picked this shade because it seemed somewhat similar to Velvet Teddy by Mac and I thought it would make for a perfect everyday shade. However, the liquid lipstick on my pale skin actually looks really dark. Nonetheless it’s still a very nice colour and it will be perfect for Autumn.
The lipliner in the kit is slightly lighter than the liquid lipstick and if worn alone does look more like Velvet Teddy. I would actually prefer if the liquid lipstick was the same colour as the lipliner. I find that the lip liner applies really well. It’s very creamy, but completely matte. It is also very pigmented. Due to it’s formula, you can wear it alone and it will look great and won’t dry out your lips. The only downside to this lipliner is that it does smudge slightly.
The liquid lipstick also applies very well. It is very creamy, yet pigmented. It dries very quickly, but not too quickly that you can’t make a precise application. Once it has dried down, it doesn’t move. It is kiss proof and doesn’t come off whilst snacking, eating or drinking. The lipstick also doesn’t feel sticky, heavy or dry. It actually feels so light on your lips that you can’t tell that you’ve got lipstick on. It’s very long wearing. However, I found that after four hours it does start to feel slightly more drying, but it doesn’t change how it looks on the lips. Reapplication of this is perfect. It doesn’t crumble or dry out the lips. Reapplication also tames the drying feeling almost as if you’ve applied lip balm.
Kylie Cosmetics Koko K Lip Kit
I don’t wear pink lipstick very often, but I tried to pick the four shades to suit different occasions. I find that Koko K is a very summery shade and can be worn on more ‘dressy’ occasions. It’s a gorgeous colour and despite it being quite bright for me, it’s still very wearable.
Both the lipliner and liquid lipstick have exactly the same formula as Dolce K. The lip liner is very creamy, but completely matte and can be worn alone. The liquid lipstick is very pigmented, long wearing, dries down quickly and doesn’t feel drying.
Kylie Cosmetics Mary Jo K Lip Kit
I absolutely love red lipstick. This is definitely my favourite shade out of the four. The application of both the lip liner and liquid lipstick were the same as with the previously mentioned shades. However, the formula of this liquid lipstick is slightly different. Strangely, this lipstick does transfer on drink bottles and cups/mugs, yet it’s kiss proof. I also noticed that even though this lipstick transfers, it lasts longer than the other two shades already mentioned. It’s definitely the best red lipstick I’ve ever tried. I don’t know whether it’s because I can eat curries and burgers and the lipstick will still be on my lips afterwards or because it’s the only red that doesn’t somehow end up on my chin. All I know is I really love this one.
Kylie Cosmetics Love Bite Lip Kit
I picked this out specifically for Autumn and Winter as it’s a lovely vampy shade. This one was the only one that disappointed me. The liquid lipstick was slightly more difficult to work with when it came to application. Not only that, but it wasn’t long lasting at all. As soon as I had some food, most of the lipstick was gone.
Although there are some inconsistencies between the formulas of the different shades, I’m still very impressed by these. If I’m completely honest, these exceeded my expectations. They are the only matte liquid lipsticks that I can wear for more than an hour without my lips looking extremely dry. I also tested these out when I had a cold sore scab on my lips and these covered it nicely and didn’t make it irritated or look dry.
So why will I never purchase from Kylie Cosmetics again?
Sadly, I had bad experience with the company itself rather than the products. I ordered the lip kits on the 5th May, but I only received my shipment email on the 19th May. They did send me an email on the 11th May and the 16th May stating that they haven’t forgotten about me and apologised that they’re late with the shipment of my order. I completely understood this as I get that Kylie Cosmetics get a lot of orders all the time and I know that I’m not the only one who loved the Cinco de Mayo deal. They actually included a free Kylie lipgloss in the shade Literally in my parcel to make up for the delay.
The reason why I actually won’t be purchasing from Kylie Cosmetics again is because I had to pay unreasonable customs to receive my parcel. Don’t get me wrong, I knew I will have to pay customs before I ordered. I have ordered beauty products from the U.S. plenty of times, so I’m very aware of the high customs charges. However, what Kylie Cosmetics did was charge me customs for the two lip kits I never paid for. Basically, because of the buy one get one free deal I paid $58 for the fours lip kits and $14.95 for shipping which came to total of $72.95. Yet, when I received my package the parcel stated that I paid a total of $116 for my products alone and listed all four lip kits valued at $29 each. This increased my customs charge to £27.98.
The company only cares about money.
I probably overpaid £10-15 for the customs. However, it’s not about the money for me. Kylie Cosmetics also get a percentage of the customs charge, so obviously the higher the customs charge, the more money they get. I don’t like companies that exploit consumers like that. They didn’t list the free lipgloss that came in the parcel, yet they listed the free lip kits that I never paid for.
In reality, I’m actually not that surprised, because all the merchandise sold by the Kardashian/Jenner family has been involved in some sort of scandal. I’ve read about the same thing happening to other people when Kylie first launched her Cosmetics company. I was just naive and thought that the company has cleaned up their act since it’s been running for a while now, but I guess I was wrong. It’s such a shame as I really do love the products and have been wanting to purchase the eyeshadow palettes. However, I just cannot support companies that only care about making money which is why I will never purchase from Kylie Cosmetics again.
Have you ever purchased anything from Kylie Cosmetics? If so what was your experience like and what do you think about the products?
